Who Do Evictions Really Affect?

Each month in Greene County over 2,200 evictions are filed with the courts against the tenants of Springfield. Based on housing data from the U.S. Census that equates to 5% of the cities being forced out of their homes every month. To make matters worse because Missouri is a state that allows for “At-Will” evictions, not all of these filings are for just reasons. This isn’t an issue that affects only low-income residents but poses a threat to anybody who rents in Missouri, and with only 10% of Springfield tenants receiving legal representation many people don’t have the means to have an accurate and just outcome in court.

OUR RIGHTS, OUR HOMES, OUR FUTURE: A Town Hall to Demand a Tenants' Right to Counsel

This Saturday, Springfield tenants and allies gathered in Resurrection Church to turn up the pressure on City Council to pass a Right to Counsel in our city. The event was titled Our Rights, Our Homes, Our Future, in reference to a few of the things that a Right to Counsel would protect. City Council has been sitting on an RTC proposal without action for over a year and a half, and STUN has had enough of their stalling.

TENANT VICTORIES IN THE NEWS!!

Recent celebrations include a key victory for our friends and colleagues in the Rosewood-Cedarwood Tenants Union this month, as tenants facing eviction were granted an injunction allowing them to stay in their homes while their lawsuit proceeds, as well as Missouri voters passing NO on Amendment 4 in the state election.

OUR RIGHTS, OUR HOMES, OUR FUTURE: A Town Hall to Demand a Tenants' Right to Counsel

This month we're getting ready to turn up the pressure on City Council to push forward on Right to Counsel with a major town hall on August 29th. The theme is Our Rights, Our Homes, Our Future, because that's what Right to Counsel represents. RTC has been one of STUN's policy priorities from the beginning, and through our efforts last year we succeeded in getting a proposal to City Council's Community Involvement Committee. Unfortunately, it's been there ever since, and Committee Chair Callie Carroll has shown no intention of letting it get any further.

Paving Over the Power of the People

In 1908 Missourians voted to approve an amendment to our constitution giving the citizens of our state the power to propose laws and constitutional amendments ourselves. This makes Missouri one of only eighteen states where the citizens have the power to act when politicians we elect decide not to work with the people’s best interests in mind. Now in 2026, several members of the Missouri legislature are seeking to bring the processes we have to make our voice heard to a grinding halt.

GETTING THE WORD OUT: Get Out the Vote Campaign Is in Full Swing

The efforts to spread the word about the August 4th election, and the disastrous amendments on the ballot, are well underway. STUN is just one of many area organizations collaborating on the Get Out the Vote campaign, including many of our frequent partners like Missouri Jobs with Justice and the NAACP. The campaign kicked off on July 18th, with a rally at the Drew Lewis Foundation, as part of the statewide John Lewis Weekend of Action, inspired by the late civil rights activist's directive to "get in good trouble".

COURT WATCH: The Real People in the Eviction Statistics

STUN has been conducting an eviction case court watch for the past few months. Seldom do tenants get an opportunity to humanize themselves and their situation in this situation. But two stories in particular stand out to me in my time of personally observing this process.

PROTECT OUR RIGHTS: Springfield Coalition to Unite Against Hostile Legislation

STUN ended the month strong with a solidarity event at the library's Hatch Auditorium to kick Springfield's activist community into action. Titled "kNOw Your Ballot" and hosted by Angela Frantz of Abortion Action Missouri, the event was a collaboration between STUN, Abortion Action Missouri, Missouri Jobs with Justice, the League of Women Voters of Southwest Missouri, and Springfield NAACP, focused on the legislative items up for a vote in the upcoming elections in August and November.

Call for Working Class, Pro-Housing Justice Citizens’ Advisory Board Applicants

There are currently four openings for our city’s Citizens Advisory Board (CAB) in search of Springfield citizens to oversee the use of the ¾ tax incentive, also known as the Spring Forward SGF Tax. This is the tax that was previously going to be funnelled into the proposed convention center that Springfieldians voted down twice, meaning we have won back the opportunity to use this funding for its intended purpose of improving our neighborhoods, streets, and parks.

The Moral Impact of Evictions

It did not take long to impress upon me the dire need for Right To Council here in Springfield. Just within 15 minutes of witnessing eviction cases I heard heart breaking stories of loss and struggle. One after another citizens of this town were brought before a judge with no one to help them. No one to explain, negotiate or argue on their behalf.

DON'T TRUST CONVENTION CENTER TO LIVE UP TO PROMISES - Vote 'No' on Hotel Tax

The people of Springfield have been very clear all along: we don’t trust the convention center to live up to its promises and we don’t want this new tax pushing it forward. That’s what we said at the ballot box in November. That’s what we told the city in their feedback survey after the election. And that’s what I heard at the Town Halls hosted by many of our city council members. I have heard from tenants and homeowners, from Republicans and Democrats and Democratic Socialists, from college students and retired people and everyone in between, and across all their differences these folks agree on one thing: a new convention center won’t solve Springfield’s problems.
