There are currently four openings for our city’s Citizens Advisory Board (CAB) in search of Springfield citizens to oversee the use of the ¾ tax incentive, also known as the Spring Forward SGF Tax. This is the tax that was previously going to be funnelled into the proposed convention center that Springfieldians voted down twice, meaning we have won back the opportunity to use this funding for its intended purpose of improving our neighborhoods, streets, and parks.
This nine chair committee board provides recommendations on how this sales tax is implemented to support neighborhoods and community improvement projects. I encourage members of STUN to apply because having someone with on-the-ground knowledge of housing issues in our city in a council position could lead to incredible progress for our neighborhoods. Interested applicants must be registered voters with a minimum of two years of living in Springfield. Additional requirements include an up to date resume and two or more professional references.
The ideal candidate may not be someone with an extensive political background, but instead a passionate, organized team player that listens to the feedback of their neighbors and can transform those concerns into lasting solutions. This could manifest as advocating for the proven support and effectiveness of the West Central rental licensing and inspection pilot and expanding it citywide. It could look like applying pressure against initiatives that do not align with tenants and our diverse working class community. Going after a government committee position may strike some as intimidating, but the swarm has your back! Your fellow union members would help you build power and confidence in representing our shared values for the betterment of Springfield.
Applications for a board position, both temporary and one with opportunity for re-appointment, close June 10th at 5:00 PM.
